Freezer Repair — Common Questions
5 questions people ask about freezer repair, answered plainly. Anything not covered here can go in the notes when you book.
Still have questions?
Book online and tell us what the freezer is doing. The model number, if you can find it, helps identify parts before the visit.
Probably not. Most chest freezers are manual-defrost by design, so frost builds every time the lid is opened and has to be melted off now and then. If it builds much faster than it used to, check that the lid closes fully and the gasket is not torn, because a small gap feeds frost continuously.
USDA guidance is about 48 hours for a full freezer and about 24 hours for a half-full one, as long as the door stays closed. Keep it shut, move the most valuable food to another freezer or a cooler with ice if you can, and book the repair early in the day.
Check the manual for the room temperature range the model is rated for. In an Austin garage in summer, a freezer that is not rated for that heat runs almost constantly and may not hold 0°F. Leaving space around it and keeping the condenser clean helps, but a freezer cannot be converted to a garage-rated model with a part.
Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE Appliances, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid, Frigidaire and 11 more: every manufacturer on the list that builds a freezer. Each brand has its own page covering how it builds its freezers.
It is usually on the inside wall near the top or on the back of the cabinet. A phone photo of the rating label is the easiest way to share it, and it lets likely parts be checked before the visit.

A freezer is diagnosed in a set order: the door gasket and the defrost circuit before the sealed system — frost build-up has several possible causes, and only one of them is costly.
Common freezer problems and their causes
Not Freezing: When food in a freezer stays soft or starts to thaw, the cabinet is losing heat faster than the system can remove it, or the system has stopped removing it at all. On frost-free uprights the usual reason is a coil packed with frost that the fan cannot push air through. After that come a stalled fan, a compressor that is not starting and, less often, a refrigerant leak. Before booking, listen at the back: a silent machine with a warm cabinet points to power or starting, while a running one points to airflow or the sealed system.
Excessive Frost Buildup: How much frost is normal depends on the type. A manual-defrost chest or upright builds a layer over time and needs defrosting by hand once it reaches about a quarter inch. A frost-free model should stay mostly clear, so heavy frost there means warm, moist air is getting in or the automatic defrost has stopped working. Check first that the lid or door closes fully with nothing in the way and that the gasket is not torn.
Strange Noise: A freezer makes some sounds on purpose: the compressor hums, refrigerant gurgles as it moves, and cabinets tick as they warm and cool. A new noise is different. Grinding or chirping usually comes from a fan whose blade is touching frost or whose bearings are going, rattling tends to be a loose drain pan or something resting against the cabinet, and a loud knock at shutdown can come from the compressor. Note whether the sound stops when you open the door, which cuts power to the inside fan on many uprights.
Water Leaking from Freezer: Water under or in front of a freezer almost always starts as melted frost that did not reach the drain pan. On frost-free uprights the defrost drain can freeze or clog, sending meltwater onto the floor or under the bottom shelf. Chest freezers usually have a drain plug near the base that can be left open or leak after manual defrosting. Condensation from a poor door seal adds to it. Wipe the floor dry and watch where water first appears after a defrost cycle.
Door Seal Issue: A freezer seal can fail in several ways short of an obvious tear: it can go flat, pull away at a corner, or stop meeting the frame because the door has dropped. Signs include frost near one edge, the compressor running longer than before, and a door that swings open again after closing. Close the door on a dollar bill at several points around the edge; if the bill slides out without resistance, the seal is not doing its job there.
The freezer fault most often misread
A freezer that fails without a sound: a unit in a garage has no alarm and shows no code, so the first clue is usually food that has thawed.
Repair or replace?
Gaskets, thermostats, start relays, fans and defrost parts are inexpensive and worth replacing. A compressor or refrigerant leak on an inexpensive chest freezer usually tips toward replacement; on a built-in freezer column, repair is usually still the better value.
How freezers differ by brand
Chest freezers from most brands are manual-defrost and mechanically simple; frost-free uprights add a fan and defrost system; built-in columns from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Miele and others run their own sealed systems; and several GE and Frigidaire uprights are sold as garage-ready.
Freezers in Central Texas homes
The local factor that matters most for a freezer is chest and upright freezers in garages, which bake in summer — pushing the compressor to run nonstop — and in a rare hard freeze like February 2021 can get cold enough that some models stop running properly.
