FAQ

Cooktop Repair — Common Questions

5 questions people ask about cooktop repair, answered plainly. Anything not covered here can go in the notes when you book.

Still have questions?

Book online and tell us what the cooktop is doing. The model number, if you can find it, helps identify parts before the visit.

No. Switch it off at the breaker and leave it off. A crack can let spills reach the elements and wiring underneath, and the glass can break further when it heats. The glass top is replaced as a part, and the elements are checked for damage at the same time.

Induction only works with pans that have a magnetic base. If a fridge magnet does not stick firmly to the bottom, the pan will not work. A pan that is too small for the zone, or one with a warped base, can also go undetected. If a pan that used to work no longer does, the zone itself may have a fault.

On most gas cooktops every igniter sparks whenever any knob is turned to light, so that is normal. Clicking that continues after the flame is lit, or starts on its own, usually points to moisture around a burner or a failing switch or spark module.

Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE Appliances, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid, Frigidaire and 15 more: every manufacturer on the list that builds a cooktop. Each brand has its own page covering how it builds its cooktops.

It is usually on the underside of the cooktop, visible from the cabinet below, or on the burner box. A phone photo of the rating label is the easiest way to share it, and it lets likely parts be checked before the visit.

Cooktop repair around Austin

Cooktop repair across Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park & Leander and Georgetown for the 23 brands on the list that build one. Most repairs take about 1–2 hours on site, including the diagnosis, and you get a quote before any work starts.

A cooktop is diagnosed in a set order: on gas, the igniters and burner ports; on radiant and induction, the element or coil, the switch or generator board, and the wiring — a flame that burns unevenly or a burner that will not catch is almost always a port or igniter problem, not a valve.

Common cooktop problems and their causes

Burner Not Working: One burner or element that does nothing while the others work points to a fault in that position only, which rules out the power supply or gas line to the whole cooktop. On gas models it is usually a wet or misaligned burner cap, a clogged port or a failed igniter; on electric models it is usually the element, its switch or a burned terminal. Before booking, swap a working coil element into that spot on a coil top, or on a gas top dry the cap and head and seat them squarely.

Uneven Heat Distribution: Food that browns in a ring or on one side of the pan is often a cookware or setup problem before it is a cooktop fault. Warped pan bottoms, a pan much larger than the burner, and a cooktop that is not level cause most complaints. On gas, partly blocked burner ports give an uneven flame; on radiant glass, a damaged element coil can leave a cold section; on induction, a pan smaller than the coil heats unevenly. Put a small level on the cooktop and try a flat-bottomed pan sized to the burner.

Won't Ignite: When you hear the igniter click but the gas never catches, the spark is there and something is stopping it from reaching the gas, or the gas from reaching the spark. A burner cap sitting off-center is the most common reason, followed by moisture after a boil-over, clogged ports and a weak spark from a dirty or cracked electrode. On a gas cooktop, remove the cap and head, let them dry completely, clear the ports with a straight pin and reseat them before trying again.

Control Panel Issue: Touch controls on smooth-top and induction cooktops can stop responding, respond to the wrong zone, or lock out because the panel detects water, a pot resting on it, or a fault in the electronics. Many models also have a control lock that looks like a failure when it is on. Wipe the panel dry, remove anything sitting on it, check the manual for the lock key, and turn the breaker off for a minute to reset the controls.

Gas Smell: A gas smell near a cooktop needs a quick decision. A brief whiff when a burner is lit and catches late is normal; a smell that lingers with the burners off is not. The source can be the flexible supply connector, a fitting behind the cooktop, or a burner valve not closing. If the smell is strong or persistent, do not operate any switches, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

The cooktop fault most often misread

An induction cooktop that throws an error during long, hard use, which is often overheating from poor ventilation underneath rather than a failed generator board.

Repair or replace?

Igniters, switches, elements and spark modules are modest repairs. A cracked glass top or an induction generator board costs more, and on an older cooktop that quote is weighed against replacement.

How cooktops differ by brand

Professional rangetops from Wolf, Viking and Thermador use high-output burners with re-ignition or very-low-simmer systems; European brands such as Bertazzoni and Smeg use flame-safety devices that need the knob held for a few seconds; and induction from Bosch, Miele, Samsung, LG and others relies on fans and generator boards under the glass.

Cooktops in Central Texas homes

The local factor that matters most for a cooktop is the split between all-electric homes, which use radiant smooth-tops and increasingly induction, and homes with natural gas from Texas Gas Service, where igniters and burner ports are the everyday repairs.
